What to Wear to Your Engagement Session: A Guide for Both of You
May 13, 2025One of the most common questions I get asked as a wedding photographer is, “What should we wear for our engagement photos?” And I totally get it - choosing outfits that feel authentic, flattering, and timeless can feel like a big task. But don’t worry, I’ve got you. Whether your vibe is elegant and polished or relaxed and cozy, here are my tried-and-true tips for both of you to feel confident and look amazing in your photos.
For Her: Elevated, Effortless, and True to You
1. Think Timeless Over Trendy
Neutral tones, soft fabrics, and classic silhouettes photograph beautifully. Flowing dresses, skirts with movement, or elevated casual looks (like tailored pants with a blouse) create a romantic feel that doesn’t try too hard.
2. Choose Comfort and Confidence
You want to be able to move freely - laugh, spin, walk, cuddle - so avoid anything too tight or uncomfortable. If you’re fidgeting or adjusting your outfit constantly, it’ll show in the photos. Choose something that makes you feel like your most beautiful, relaxed self.
3. Add Texture and Movement
Chiffon, linen, cotton, lace - these textures catch the light in magical ways. Dresses with some movement add an extra dreamy vibe to photos, especially in outdoor sessions.
4. Consider Hair & Makeup
This is a great opportunity to book your wedding makeup trial! If that’s not in the cards, opt for a slightly polished version of your everyday look. Loose curls, soft waves, or a sleek pony all look great on camera.
5. Bring Options
If time allows, I recommend bringing two outfits: one more dressed up and one a little more casual. It gives you variety in your gallery and a chance to show off different sides of your personality.
For Him: Sharp, Comfortable, and Cohesive
1. Dress Like the Best Version of Yourself
A well-fitted button-down with chinos or trousers always looks great. If you’re more laid-back, even a clean t-shirt under a jacket can work. The goal is elevated-casual - think date-night, not boardroom.
2. Keep It Neutral & Classic
Earth tones, creams, navy, olive, soft gray - these all photograph beautifully and pair well with her outfit. Avoid neon colors, loud patterns, and logos that might distract from your connection.
3. Layer Smartly
A blazer, jacket, or even a textured sweater adds dimension and polish. Plus, it’s an easy way to switch up your look mid-session without a full outfit change.
4. Don’t Forget the Details
Make sure your shoes are clean and stylish (yes, they’ll show in the photos!), your nails are trimmed, and you’ve steamed or ironed your outfit. These little things go a long way in creating a clean, put-together look.
Together: Coordination Over Matching
You don’t need to be twins in color or style, but you should look like you’re going to the same place. Aim for a cohesive palette (warm tones or cool tones, not both), and balance your levels of formality. If she’s in a flowy dress, a suit jacket on him elevates the whole look. If she’s rocking jeans and a cute top, he can go with something like a Henley and boots.
